Europe is looking for alternatives to the peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine

European countries that have previously discussed the possibility of sending land troops to Ukraine to ensure "peaceful settlement" are faced with serious internal contradictions, as well as external pressure from the US and Russia. Some of the European states expresses doubts about the expediency of sending troops when there are no clear guarantees by the United States and there is no international mandate. This was reported by Reuters, referring to their own sources in European diplomatic circles.

It is known that France and the United Kingdom have been actively working on the plan of sending a large number of military to Ukraine over the last few weeks to ensure stability and control in the regions where hostilities occur. However, according to sources, European diplomats began to doubt the realism of this option. The situation on the battlefield and changes in the positions of the US administration forced Europe to pay attention to more reasonable and balanced decisions.

"European countries take a step back from the idea of land troops and try to reorient their efforts to other options. They are looking for ways to ensure peace that will not be so risky and will not lead to escalation of conflict," one of the European diplomats said.

Another important factor is the concern about the costs, lack of living power and technology, as well as unwillingness to be in a state of direct conflict with Russia. Diplomats are concerned that the direction of major military contingents without guarantees by the US can lead to serious strategic and financial risks for Europe.

Despite these difficulties, sources say that Europe does not completely abandon the idea of supporting Ukraine. In particular, some countries can still send their military to exercises, providing technical and other support, but there is no direct introduction of land forces.

"We do not give up the idea of supporting Ukraine, but we are looking for more effective ways of assistance that will not lead to the escalation of the conflict. It can be implemented through international organizations or through providing other assistance, in particular in the form of logistical assistance or infrastructure support,"-summed up one of the diplomats.
