Scientists used neural networks to unravel the mystery of Raphael's masterpiece Madonna with the Rose, making a shocking discovery.
It has become standard practice to use artificial intelligence to create images based on a text description or edit uploaded photos. However, a group of English and American researchers raised this practice to a new level. They trained neural networks to recognize details in images that are usually difficult for the human eye to detect. And it was this that helped them understand that one of the faces in Raphael's painting "Madonna with a Rose" was created by another artist, not Raphael, as evidenced by the analysis of artificial intelligence.
This masterpiece by the Italian artist Raphael Santi, painted between about 1518 and 1520, is an important part of the Renaissance. It represents the Virgin Mary with Christ, John the Baptist and Saint Joseph. Although the study was published in the journal Heritage Science, where scientists stated that the face of St. Joseph was painted by a different artist, these results require further research to be confirmed.
The algorithm developed by the researchers is based on the use of network training on a large amount of data. This helps identify details in artwork at a microscopic level that are usually difficult for the human eye to discern.
While AI can help art experts, it won't completely replace them. The complexity of the creative process and the need to explore many aspects of art require an expert approach that cannot be provided by artificial intelligence alone.
