From February 24, 2022 to May 29, 2025, Russia's revenues from exports of fossil fuels amounted to more than 883 billion euros, of which 228 billion euros received from countries that officially imposed sanctions against it. Despite the US and the United Kingdom embargo on Russian oil and gas imports, as well as the EU ban on the supply of marine raw oil from the Russian Federation, Europe continues to buy Russian fuel. Pipeline gas revenues increased by 9%for 2024, and Russia's total revenues from energy export decreased by only 5%. This indicates that even under sanction pressure, the Kremlin retains vital sources of warfare.
Another mechanism for bypassing sanctions was the processing of Russian oil in third countries, after which it is exported as products to Europe. Often, oil is diluted with raw materials from other sources, hiding its origin.
