What do you need to maintain health, energy and a clear mind in the elderly? The answer can be hidden in the choice of products. A new large -scale study proved: what we eat in the middle of life directly influences our physical and mental state in old age.
The team of scientists from the Harvard School of Public Health and Copenhagen University has analyzed the food habits of more than 105 thousand people over three decades. Their purpose was to determine which diet models help people to live up to 70 years without serious chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease. The results published in Nature Medicine have shown that the most effective longevity strategy is an alternative healthy diet (AHEI).
Designed by Harvard experts, AHEI focuses on: fruits and vegetables, whole grain products, nuts and legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, avocado). Instead, it is recommended to exclude or minimize from the diet: red and processed meat, high sugar drinks, excess salt. Those who carefully adhered to AHEI had 86% higher chances for healthy old age compared to those who neglected this diet. In addition to AHEI, the study also evaluated the effectiveness of a planetary index of healthy eating (PHDI), which focuses on plant foods and minimizes animal products. This approach not only supports human health, but also reduces the negative impact on the environment.
Choosing a healthy diet at the middle age can significantly increase the chances of a long and quality life. Nutrition, rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grain products and healthy fats, not only reduces the risk of chronic diseases, but also helps to maintain physical, cognitive and mental activity in older age.
