Zelenskyi offers a new approach to multiple citizenship

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky during a presentation of the Internal Stability Plan in the Verkhovna Rada emphasized the need for the introduction of multiple citizenship in the country. He called this question one of the key elements of the state development strategy.

Zelensky noted that a large part of the temporarily abroad Ukrainians have already received or plan to obtain citizenship of other countries. According to the current legislation, Ukraine does not recognize multiple citizenship, which creates legal and administrative difficulties for citizens who want to keep in touch with the Motherland.

"We must create the conditions under which our people would feel part of Ukraine abroad, even having passports of other countries," Zelensky emphasized.

On January 22, 2024, the President submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a bill on multiple citizenship, which aims to harmonize Ukrainian legislation with modern realities and support the diaspora. This will be an important step in maintaining ties with millions of Ukrainians who work and live abroad.

In addition to multiple citizenship, Zelensky announced the restart of the diplomatic service and the renewal of staffing among Ukrainian ambassadors. These changes, in his opinion, will help improve international cooperation and increase the effectiveness of Ukraine's interests abroad.

"We must be strong both domestically and beyond. It will allow us to stand in the most difficult times and continue moving forward," the President summarized.
