Like May, on March 1, the holiday grew out of the labor movement and has American roots.

In 1908, 15,000 women in New York came to a demonstration, demanding a reduction in the work day, an increase in wages and voting rights (in most states, women won it in 1920, when they approved the 19th amendment to the US Constitution). The following year, the American Socialist Party proposed to make the last Sunday of May Day of Workers' Women.

In August 1910, a famous figure in the German Social Democracy, Clara Tsetkin, at a conference in Copenhagen, proposed to establish an International Day of Struggle for Women's Equality and Emancipation.

About one hundred participants from 17 countries supported the idea unanimously.

In 1911 he was first celebrated in Germany, Austria-Hungary, Denmark and Switzerland.

Then the women's day in different countries was celebrated on March 2, 9 and 12, as well as May 2 and 12.

The date of March 8 came to the international left movement from Russia. In 1917, on this day (February 23 in the old style), a strike of workers of weaving factories in Petrograd began with the requirements of "Bread and Peace!", Which grew into a revolution. A week later, the Russian emperor renounced the throne, and the Provisional Government gave women the right to vote.
