Belgium is preparing to transfer to Ukraine several dozen tracked amphibious vehicles BV 206, which have proven themselves as highly efficient machines for difficult terrain conditions. These vehicles were modernized by the Belgian company John Cockerill and ready for use on the front line, in particular for the evacuation of the wounded.
The BV 206, developed by the Swedish company Hägglunds, is a unique caterpillar car consisting of two modules that provide high patency in the strictest conditions, such as snow drifts, mountains or swampy terrain. Due to the ability to move both on land and water, these vehicles are widely used in both military and civil missions.
Key characteristics BV 206: dimensions: length 6.36 m, width 2.3 m, height 2.43 m. Harvesting capacity: up to 1.37 tons. Content: up to 10 people. Engine: power 177 hp, with a stroke of 330 km. Speed: up to 52 km/h on roads and 4 km/h on the water.
Since its creation, more than 11,000 BV 206 units have been produced, which are currently operated in 37 countries.
Machines transferred to Ukraine have undergone a comprehensive modernization: a new Mercedes engine has been installed, which increases their productivity. Updated the steering system for greater maneuverability. Special equipment, including a stretcher system, has been added to evacuate the wounded.
BV 206 is an important replenishment for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Their high mobility and adaptability to the difficult conditions of the terrain make these vehicles ideal for use in combat areas where other equipment may not cope. In October 2023, Germany had already transferred 73 BV 206 units to Ukraine, and Belgian machines will be a significant addition to this arsenal.
The BV 206 Modernization John Cockerill and their transfer to Ukraine is another example of supporting European partners to meet the needs of the Ukrainian military. These machines will not only increase mobility on the battlefield, but also help to save the lives of defenders through the possibility of prompt evacuation.
