The issue of borders and territorial integrity in Ukraine became the subject of acute discussion both in Ukrainian society and in the international community. One of the key topics in this discussion is the idea of restoring the borders of 1991, which usually means a return to the boundaries that existed at the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Not all of Zelensky's surroundings believe in the possibility of entering the borders of 1991, writes in the column for The Guardian British historian, writer, professor at Oxford University Timothy Hartton-Ees, who specializes in Eastern Europe.
“In the country, the discontent of President Vladimir Zelensky, whose term of office would have ended on May 20, if the country was not in war. Several separate sources have informed me that Zelensky is watching their ratings very carefully and they are gradually falling, ”Hartton-Ees writes with reference to conversations with representatives of Zelensky's surroundings.
He says he has repeatedly heard criticism against Zelensky because of his "unrealistic hopes" on the return of the whole territory, including Crimea.
"Even high -ranking officials privately define the victory privately," the journalist writes and cites such a quote of the source.
“I am publicly supporting what the president says. I do not know that we must survive as an independent Western state that has the opportunity to develop, ”Timothy Harton-Ed quotes his source in the Ukrainian authorities.
