Bulgaria has sent a request to the European Commission with a request to suspend egg imports from Ukraine. This solution resulted from the sharp increase in imports, which, according to Bulgarian producers, has a negative impact on the local economy and competition.
Bulgaria has asked the European Commission to suspend Ukrainian eggs to resolve the situation in its market. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food of Bulgaria writes about it.
During the EU Council meeting on agriculture and fisheries, which is held today in Brussels, the Minister of Agriculture and Food of Bulgaria George Takhov appealed to the European Commission with a proposal to prohibit egg imports from Ukraine to Bulgaria. According to the minister, imports of eggs from Ukraine seriously influences production in Bulgaria itself.
According to the Bulgarian Ministry, from the first half of 2024, the import of Ukrainian eggs to Bulgaria reached 2 618 tons, which is five times growth in annual calculation. At the same time, import prices are much lower than the prices for Bulgarian eggs, which puts serious pressure on internal prices. The minister also justified the fact that the protective measures taken at this time at the EU level do not reach the expected restraining effect and are not sufficient to facilitate the situation in the Bulgarian egg market.
The minister stressed that it is important to find the intersection point where the rights of Bulgarian producers will be saved and stopped egg imports until the market is regulated in Bulgaria.
We are in favor of firm support from the people of Ukraine, but it should not cost bankruptcy and violation of our farmers' rights
Earlier, Takhov explained that when the import of a certain type of product or goods - vegetables, meat, eggs - reaches certain limits that the EC has outlined in advance, the country may activate the mechanism of banning their import.
