According to The Wall Street Journal, the campaign of Ukraine for the construction of defense structures has not brought significant success, and Ukrainian troops intended for hostilities are forced to dig trenches under frequent shelling. In response to the growing activity of Russia, Ukraine announced the beginning of construction of defense structures in November, in particular in the Avdiivka area. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for this process to accelerate and attract private companies and donors.
However, as the publication notes, Western officials and the Ukrainian military acknowledge that this campaign did not produce significant results, which is a problem for Ukraine, as Russia continues to increase its attacks. At the same time, Russia continues to embrace Ukrainian security forces, forcing them to retreat from some territories to the west of Avdiivka.
The Wall Street Journal notes that the construction of physical defense structures is becoming vital for Ukraine, as the country is also trying to mobilize its troops. In this context, it is noted that Ukraine has a rather non -standard conscription policy, as it calls only men from 27 years of age to the army, excluding from the compulsory service of younger than this age, parents of three or more children, as well as persons who care for people with disabilities.
