Experts warn of the danger of iatrogenic botulism after botulotoxin injections

Leading Ukrainian infectious specialist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Olga Golubovska recently drew attention to the increase in the number of cases of iatrogenic botulism that occur after cosmetic procedures. In her post on the Facebook platform, she noted that this condition is often caused by the use of poor quality drugs, and sometimes not sufficiently qualified specialists. Golubovskaya emphasized that it is not so easy to diagnose iatrogenic botulism, since the symptoms may not be obvious or atypical. She also noted that the treatment of this disease has not yet been permanently developed, and the recovery process can be long and complex.

Irogenic botulism is a serious complication that can occur after cosmetic or therapeutic injection of botulotoxin. It is a poisonous substance that affects the nervous system and can lead to muscle paralysis. It is usually used in cosmetology for wrinkle correction or treatment of other aesthetic problems. However, if you need botulotoxin or its poor substitutes, dangerous complications may occur.

Olga Golubovskaya points out that iatrogenic botulism is often the result of the use of doubtful drugs. This can be both a result of poor quality injections and the wrong performance of the procedure by non -qualified specialists. The lack of sufficient control over the quality of drugs and licensing of cosmetologists also plays an important role in the occurrence of this problem.

Clinical symptoms of botulism can occur several months after the procedure, which makes the diagnosis particularly complicated. Patients often do not associate their condition with cosmetic procedures, and therefore timely assistance can be detained. The main symptoms include:

  1. Ophthalmoplegia is a violation of eyeball movements that can lead to double vision.

  2. Dysphagia - difficulty in swallowing.

  3. Muscle weakness, which may spread over time to other parts of the body.

  4. Anxiety, irritability and insomnia, which often accompany other neurological symptoms.

In some cases, the wavy course of the disease is noted, especially if the toxin has been administered. Exact diagnosis can be difficult because the toxin may be in very small doses or even absent in the blood at the time of laboratory analysis.

In order to avoid the development of iatrogenic botulism, experts recommend that patients carefully approach the choice of cosmetic procedures. It is important to test the qualification of cosmetologists and ensure that the drugs used have appropriate certification and obtained from reliable sources.

“You cannot neglect health, especially when it comes to cosmetic injections. It is necessary to be careful about the quality of the drugs that are introduced into the body and consult only for proven specialists, ”Golubovskaya notes.

The study conducted by the World Health Organization also confirms that iatrogenic botulism is a rare but serious complication after cosmetic or therapeutic injection of botulotoxin. Symptoms can vary from weakness and fatigue to more serious visual impairment problems. Early diagnosis and timely administration of antitoxin are important, as the consequences can be severe without it.

Cosmetic procedures can be safe if they are carried out properly and with all quality standards. However, as the latest trends show, the increase in cases of iatrogenic botulism emphasizes the need for a more serious approach to the choice of cosmetologists and drugs. Experts urge not to neglect their health and be as careful as possible when choosing procedures that can affect your well -being.
