Acute hunger threatens millions of Sudanese residents

Without urgent, decisive action by the international community, a large part of Sudan's population is at risk of acute hunger, warned UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk and UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths in a joint statement.

According to the statement, millions of Sudanese people facing starvation are in a very critical condition. They have been forced to leave their homes due to conflict, come under fire and are cut off from humanitarian aid.

In particular, 18 million people in the country suffer from malnutrition, including 3.6 million children. The statement stressed that without immediate and significant changes, a dire scenario would emerge where famine would engulf a large part of the country.
