The Irish have rejected proposals to recognize same-sex unions in the Constitution

In Ireland, on March 9, there were two referendums, during which the population of the country rejected proposals for amendments to the Constitution concerning marriage, families and "home responsibilities" of women.

The first referendum concerned the proposal to expand the definition of family in the Constitution from the "center of society based on marriage" to an union that implies "long -term couples", including same -sex couples. The second referendum was intended to replace the wording of the "home duties of a woman" with a point of care provided by family members, as well as to remove the mention of "female role" in the family.

Although the key political parties of Ireland and many public movements supported these proposals, the population in referendums expressed their disagreement. 67.7% of the vote opposed the changes.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has stated that the government is respectful of results because it failed to convince citizens.

It should be mentioned that on March 4, Greek police sent employees to combat racism to protect the first single -sex marriage in the country between men. At an extraordinary meeting, the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church opposed the government initiative to legalize same -sex marriages and adopt children by same -sex couples. On February 15, the Parliament of Greece approved a bill on permission for same -sex marriages, which was supported by 176 of the 300 deputies.
