In 2023, the number of executions in Iran increased by 43% compared to the previous year, to at least 834 deaths. This was known from the Iranian Human Rights Group (IHR) report and the Paris Organization Against the death penalty.
According to human rights defenders, 85% of all executions made in 2023 were not officially declared by the Iranian authorities. Only 15% of cases, which is 125 executions, has been officially announced.
According to the report, last year, 471 persons were executed for drug -related crimes, which is a significant increase compared to 256 performed death sentences in the previous year. However, only 5% of these executions were officially announced.
The report also states that there are at least two minors and at least 22 women among the executioners. The number of women in the country has become the highest since 2013.
