Do you buy half a watermelon? The doctor advises you to think twice

Ukrainian dermatologist Christina Kochet warned consumers from buying cut watermelons in stores and markets. According to her, such fruits can be a serious risk to health because of the risk of infection with bacteria, including listeria and salmonella.

In her post on Instagram, the doctor explained that watermelons and melons grow directly on the ground, so dangerous microorganisms can accumulate on their skin. If the seller cuts the fruit without prior washing, all bacteria easily get into the pulp, which is then used by the buyer. Often, according to Kochet, watermelons are simply wiped with a cloth instead of washing. Another problem is storage conditions. After cutting, the fetus loses protection, and the flesh becomes an ideal environment for the reproduction of microorganisms. According to a dermatologist, watermelons, which have already been condensed under a food film, or those who are at room temperature for a long time. If the slices lie for more than two hours without a refrigerator, the risk of poisoning increases significantly. The effects of infected fetus can be serious-from gastrointestinal disorders to bacterial infections that require medical intervention.

In order to avoid risk, Christina Kochet advises to buy only whole watermelons, wash them before cutting and hygiene. The sliced fruit should be stored in the refrigerator for no more than three days.
