The UN announced a reduction of 20% of staff due to lack of funding

The United Nations plans a large -scale reduction in staff - 20% in more than 60 units. This decision was made against the background of a serious financial crisis that has covered the international structure. About it reports Associated Press with reference to sources in the management of the organization.

Reductions will affect humanitarian and political offices, as well as agencies dealing with refugees, gender equality, international trade, ecology and development of cities. In total, approximately 14,000 positions funded from the UN regular budget will be optimized.

The spokesman of the organization Stefan Duzharrik explained that these measures are part of a broader reform program initiated by General Secretary General Antoni Guterrze. According to the plan, the UN budget should be reduced by 15-20%, which is about $ 3.72 billion.

All units must submit their proposals for state optimization by June 13. The changes are expected to be taken into account in the budget for 2026, which the UN General Assembly should be considered and approved in December 2025.

Financial difficulties are partly related to the lack of contributions from the Member States. In 2024, only 152 of 193 Member States, including China, fully fulfilled their financial obligations. Among the 41 countries that have not paid contributions on time, the United States is one of the key donors of the organization.

The planned reduction of the state is concerned among the UN workers and representatives of countries depending on the humanitarian support of the organization. The final consequences of reforms are expected to affect the work of key international programs and projects.
