Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban has expressed doubt about the effectiveness of the European Union's strategy for the departure of funds and military assistance to Ukraine, calling it "failed". He also emphasized that there is a need for "plan B".
"Today everyone knows, but they do not dare to say aloud that this strategy has failed. Obviously, it will not work […] Ukrainians will not win on the forefront," he said.
According to Orban, Hungary does not see sufficient reasons for directing the funds of taxpayers of their country to support Ukraine.
EU leaders are discussing the replenishment of the Bloc's joint budget to continue to Ukraine since 2024 and try to persuade the Prime Ministers of Hungary, Victor Orban, and Slovakia, Robert Fitzo, who oppose the 50 billion euros for Ukraine.
Orban claims that EU support does not produce results, and Fitzo has expressed anxiety in connection with corruption in Ukraine. However, the EU budget updates requires the support of all 27 bloc members.
Brussels hopes to persuade Hungary to abolish his veto veto on EU military assistance, which has been blocked due to a long dispute.
The decision to update the budget of the block should be made by the end of the year, since the current financing of the EU for Ukraine will end in early 2024.
