Porsche 911 chose the top of the volcano, setting a new world height record

The Porsche company set a world record for the height of ascent for cars, reaching a height of 6,734 meters. For this, two specially prepared 911 Carrera 4S with the names Doris and Edith were used, as well as an international team of specialists from Chile, France, Germany, the USA, Canada and Switzerland.

Both cars, Doris and Edith, kept their standard 3.0 "six" (450 hp, 530 Nm) and 7-speed "mechanics", but were modified in the Singer ACS style. They received on-board gearboxes with a clearance of 350 mm, manual differential locks, aramid fiber underbody protection and the innovative Porsche Warp-Connecter device, which improves traction by creating a mechanical connection between the wheels and constantly loading them.

The record was set by Edith, which was managed by Romain Dumas. This version was made lighter and more maneuverable, equipped with a steer-by-wire steering mechanism (at Porsche they call it Space Drive). All this contributed to the fact that the 911 Carrera 4S climbed higher than the Unimog U 5023 (6694 m), which had already overcome the Ojos del Salado volcano in 2020.

This expedition is reminiscent of the event when car climber Mathias Jeschke used Mercedes to transport equipment and gear in the conquest of the Ojos del Salado volcano. At that time, SUVs were equipped with special tires, a reinforced winch and a system for adjusting the balance of the center of gravity while driving.
