Russian warships, including missile carriers, are heading to Cuba for exercises

Four Russian ships, including balist missile carriers, go to the Caribbean. They will arrive at the harbor next week and will remain in Cuba until June 17.

The Cuban authorities noted that this visit corresponds to "historical friendly relations between Cuba and Russia" and "no threat to the region." Earlier, Russia reported plans to send warships to the Caribbean for conducting naval exercises.

The Havana is headed by a nuclear submarine of the class "ash", a frigate of the class "Admiral Gorshkov", as well as the oil tanker of the project 23130 "Academician Pashin" and the rescue tugboat of the project P-5757 "Nikolai Chicker". The first two vessels are carriers of the Caliber, Onyx and Zircon. All four ships belong to the Northern Fleet of the Russian Federation.

It is stated that their base will be 144 km from the US shores.

In the United States, it was unofficially stated that they did not consider the arrival of Russian ships to the Caribbean in a threat, but the US Navy will "closely monitor" training. Against the backdrop of Cuba's statements about the lack of a threat to the region, several leading media were reminded of the Caribbean crisis in 1962, which began in a similar way and almost led to a nuclear war.

The Caribbean crisis is considered to be the highest point of the Cold War, after which in the world they talked about the need for disarmament. It began with the Government of Cuba to the USSR with a request to provide military assistance to prevent the fall of Fidel Castro's government. The USSR, in response to Cuba, proposed the placement of nuclear weapons in the Caribbean.

The beginning of the Caribbean crisis was also preceded by the USSR's statement about "military exercises" in the region. Instead of training in Cuba, all the available Soviet weapons were launched, including nuclear. In response, US President John Kennedy announced a naval blockade of Cuba, which provided a search of all ships heading to the island.

At the end of October 1962, five Soviet ships approached the blockade and stopped. Only three hours remained until the possible blow of the United States in Cuba and, accordingly, the exchange of nuclear strikes. However, US and USSR leaders managed to negotiate, and the war did not begin.
