Scholz foresees a danger from right-wing populists before the EU elections

According to German Chancellor Olaf Soltz at a meeting of left -centrist European parties in Bucharest, the right parties can gain significant support in the upcoming elections to the European Parliament in June.

Scholz warned of the threat posed by the right populists who conduct aggressive campaigns against the United Europe and ignite enmity against refugees and minorities. He noted that the public opinion polls indicate the shift to the right in the upcoming elections, including the group "Identity and Democracy" may become the third largest in parliament, and the centrist group "Updating Europe" can also increase support.

Speaking at the Parliament Palace in Bucharest, Scholtz noted that the prosperous EU capable of reaching its goals is the best response to populism and autocracy. He also promised further support to Ukraine, considering it the key to restoring peace in Europe.

Elections in June to the European Parliament are expected to be a critical moment for the future of Europe, especially after the UK withdrawal from the EU. The sharp growth of right-wing parties can complicate the implementation of EU programs and promote right trends in leading countries such as Germany and France.

The focus is further support for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, immigration, climate control and legal system in Europe, as well as EU relations with China.
