The United States and Russia are negotiating in the Arctic cooperation, in particular in the fields of intelligence of natural resources, energy and trade routes. According to Bloomberg , this issue arose in the context of President Donald Trump's desire to end the war in Ukraine, in particular through direct negotiations with Vladimir Putin.
According to Bloomberg , both sides demonstrated openness to cooperation. At the same time, the United States view this step as an opportunity to reduce China's impact on Russia. However, according to sources of the publication, such a plan has a low chance of success through the strategic partnership of Moscow and Beijing, which has only strengthened since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
The Arctic remains a strategically important region, as it is surrounded not only by Russia, but also by seven NATO member countries: USA, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
At the end of last year, the Pentagon published an Arctic Strategy , which emphasized the risk of increasing cooperation between China and Russia. Under the previous administration, Joe Baiden sought to intensify military presence and control in the region to prevent Moscow and Beijing.
Now Washington seems to be looking for other mechanisms of influence, considering the possibility of cooperation with the Russian Federation. It is still unknown whether it will lead to real dialogue and changes in the geopolitical balance.
