Several NATO member states are opposition to the immediate invitation of Ukraine to the Alliance. According to Politico , the USA and Germany, which are key members of NATO, are not yet ready to support the call of President Vladimir Zelensky. They are concerned that such a step can lead to direct military conflict with Russia.
Among those who also oppose Ukraine's accession, are Hungary and Slovakia. Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban not only blocks Ukraine's military assistance from the EU funds, but also left the NATO program aimed at supplying weapons to Kiev. Meanwhile, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo stated that Ukraine's accession to NATO could be a reason for the Third World War and assured that he would never support this decision.
In addition, NATO sources report a less active but existing opposition from Belgium, Slovenia and Spain. These countries theoretically support Ukraine's accession, but may oppose if the issue becomes specific.
This situation is stress between NATO members, in particular between countries that actively support Ukraine, such as Poland and Baltic States, and those who oppose.
NATO representatives who communicated with Politico noted that the US and Germany did not reject Ukraine's accession to NATO in the future. However, Baiden's administration believes that this issue should be resolved after the war, without specific terms.
