The United States will support Ukraine if President Volodymyr Zelensky decides to negotiate with Russia to ensure a just and stable peace, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.
He emphasized that this decision depends on the Ukrainian leadership, and no country, in particular the United States, should force Ukraine to negotiate. Miller also reminded that according to the UN Charter, Ukraine has the full right to protect its borders, territorial integrity and sovereignty. He noted that the USA does not see signs of Russian President Vladimir Putin's willingness to give up his demands on the territories of Ukraine.
"Putin can agree to negotiations only on the condition that he gets everything he wants, and Ukraine does not get anything to which it has a legal right. However, this is not the format of negotiations that President Zelensky is interested in, and we support him in this approach," Miller added.
