The United States opposed the mention of the war in Ukraine in the resolution of the UN General Assembly

The United States voted against the UN General Assembly resolution, which condemns Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The corresponding vote took place the day before, April 16, reports "European Truth".

It is a resolution a/79/l/75 concerning cooperation between the United Nations and the Council of Europe. The document was prepared by Luxembourg and Lithuania and, among other things, mentioned the status of Russia, which was expelled from the Council of Europe in March 2022 after the start of a full -scale invasion of Ukraine.

The text of the resolution mentions Russia's aggression against Ukraine - in the preamble and the main part. Nevertheless, the document received widespread support: 105 countries voted in favor. Only nine, including Russia, Belarus, North Korea and the United States of America, opposed.

Explaining Washington's position, US Deputy Permanent Representative at the United Nations Jonathan Schrier stated that the document "does not contribute to the promotion of the cause of peace".

"The resolution repeats statements about the Russian-Ukrainian war, which, according to the United States, do not bring the parties closer to peaceful settlement," he said during the discussion.

At the same time, Schriers stressed that the US is hoping to further support efforts to achieve a comprehensive and sustained peace between Russia and Ukraine.

Recall that the United States remains a key ally of Ukraine in the war with the Russian Federation, but some diplomatic steps, including voting on some resolutions, raise questions about the chosen tactics in international organizations.
