In Germany, New Year's Eve was accompanied by tragic events due to careless handling of pyrotechnic. According to preliminary data, five people were killed, and hundreds were detained due to various offenses.
As of the morning of January 1, five killed as a result of pyrotechnics explosions. Tragedies occurred in different regions of the country:
- In the city of Geseke (North Rhine-Westphalia), a 24-year-old young man died due to a firecracker explosion.
- Two men of 45 and 50 years were killed in two cities of Saxony, who launched fireworks.
- Two more fatal cases occurred in Brandenburg's land.
In the German capital, several people were seriously injured in the hands, including amputations, due to firecrackers. Eight people with similar injuries were delivered only a night before.
New Year's Eve was restless and because of numerous violations of order:
- In Leipzig, young people staged mass clashes using pyrotechnics as weapons. The explosions were hit by random cars and trams, as well as law enforcement.
- In Hamburg, a crowd of hooligans attacked a fire brigade that came to extinguish a burning garbage can. Firefighters had to retreat because of danger.
Despite the chaotic events, Berlin police said that New Year's Eve was calmer than usual as it was possible to avoid major riots. More than 330 people were detained in the capital, 13 law enforcement officers were injured.
