US President Donald Trump is considering creating a new position of a special representative of war in Ukraine. He considers his ancient ally, Richard Granell, who during the previous presidential term of Trump was an ambassador to Germany and performed the duties of the director of national intelligence.
Richard Gnell is known for his long -term diplomatic career and participation in international negotiations. During the Trump presidency, he held key positions, including the United States in peace talks on Serbia and Kosovo. His experience in European affairs, as well as working in the Trump government, made him one of the favorites for the role of a special representative in the "Russian-Ukrainian conflict".
Despite the conversation about creating a new position, there is no final decision. According to sources familiar with Trump's plans, the President may choose another candidate or give up this idea altogether. There is also no guarantee that Grenell himself will agree to take this position.
Granell's views can doubt Ukraine. During a roundtable at Bloomberg in July, he offered the creation of "autonomous zones" as a way of resolving a conflict, which could be perceived as a dangerous compromise with Russia. In addition, he stated that Ukraine should not join NATO in the near future, sharing this position with many Trump allies.
Granell has a diplomat's reputation with experience in conflict resolution, but his approach to the Ukrainian question is concerned. It will be important for Ukrainian leaders to understand whether a potential special representative will be able to maintain a position that will contribute to Ukraine's sovereignty or whether its policy will be more compromise against Russia.
