In South Korea, President Yoon Seok-yeol was impeached

In South Korea, on December 14, the National Assembly voted to impeach President Yoon Seok-yeol. The decision came amid criticism of his policies, including the failed imposition of martial law, which sparked public outrage and a political crisis.

204 deputies voted for impeachment, 85 voted against, three abstained, and another eight ballots were declared invalid. This decision was a powerful political blow to the current administration, which faced serious resistance both in the parliament and among the citizens of the country.

The impeachment of Yoon Seok Yeol was the result of dissatisfaction with his administration, especially under the state of emergency he was trying to impose. His opponents claim that this decision not only did not help to stabilize the situation, but also exacerbated political instability in the country.

Yoon Seok-yeol has served as president since 2022. His administration faced a number of challenges, including economic hardship, social tensions, and foreign policy issues. However, the attempt to introduce martial law became the culmination of criticism, which led to the political isolation of the president.

The impeachment of Yoon Seok-yeol opens the way for the prime minister to temporarily act as president until the Constitutional Court makes a final decision on his removal from office. The court has 180 days to consider this issue.

This is the second time in the history of South Korea that the president has been impeached. The previous case occurred in 2017, when President Park Geun-hye was removed due to a corruption scandal.
