Lubricant leakage at the Japanese nuclear power plant after the earthquake: details of the incident

SHIKA nuclear power plant in the Japanese prefecture, Isikawa reported the leakage of grease after a recent strong earthquake. It was stated that the station, located 65 kilometers from the epicenter, found a fat spot about five to ten meters on the sea surface in front of it on Sunday. The leakage site was treated with a neutralizing agent and a small amount of oil film on the road around reactor # 2 of the power plant was detected.

The station representatives believe that the leakage of the transformer oil was due to the activation of the fire system during the earthquake. Underground shocks caused spraying of oil and spraying water around the transformer. It is noted that the oil probably got to the ditch due to precipitation.

Nevertheless, the company operating the power plant stated that leakage has no effect on the level of external radiation background and has no negative consequences for human health and the environment. It is emphasized that the station has already reported temporary power failures, oil leakage on transformers and water from nuclear fuel basins.
