Recently published satellite images and journalists' data discover new facts about the active expansion of Russia's military presence in the Black Sea. It turned out that in the port of Okramchire, in Abkhazia-a territory that is de facto controlled by Russian troops, objects are actively built for the placement of the naval base of the Russian Federation. This has serious consequences not only for the security of the region, but also for the global economy.
According to analysts, such as Seskuria from Rusi, these changes open up new opportunities for Russia to produce military capacity, in particular, against the backdrop of successful strikes of Ukraine on Russian naval activity in the Black Sea. Such actions may be part of the Russian Federation Strategy to find alternative safe ports for their ships after moving part of the fleet from Sevastopol to Novorossiysk, where the situation has not stabilized. The Okamchir base can be an important point for Russia, which allows it to control a large part of the Black Sea region, potentially threatening Ukraine and other NATO countries. In addition, the growing military presence of Russia in this part of the Black Sea can cause new stresses in the region, as Ukraine, which supports the territorial integrity of Georgia, can be involved in conflict due to the strikes caused from the Okamchyr Port.
An important aspect of this situation is the threat to one of the largest global trading routes. Previously, the bulk of trade between Europe and China was carried out through Russia. However, after the sanctions, this route was redirected through Georgia. Now, given the development of the military base in Okramir, there is a risk that this trade route can be blocked or complicated, which will seriously affect the global economy. This is especially important for the so -called "middle corridor" that connects China to the Black Sea and has strategic importance.
At the moment, the international community is watching the further steps of Russia and trying to predict the possible consequences of expanding the military base in Okemchyra for stability in the Black Sea region, as well as to ensure the safety of global trade routes.
