How France and Great Britain are preparing for possible challenges in Ukraine

Against the background of geopolitical instability and the possible victory of Donald Trump in the presidential elections in the United States, Great Britain and France intensified discussions about the possible dispatch of foreign troops or private defense companies to Ukraine.

The question of the direct participation of the Western military in Ukraine was once again on the agenda. French President Emmanuel Macron raised this issue back in February, but then the initiative faced resistance, especially from Germany. Despite this, the idea has not been completely rejected and, according to sources, has gained new life in recent weeks, in particular against the background of the visit of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to France.

Negotiations between Paris and London are focused on creating a core of allies in Europe capable of strengthening support for Ukraine. A French military source confirmed that the consultations between the countries cover aspects of European security and defense cooperation.

In an interview with the BBC last week, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barro emphasized the need to avoid restrictions on support for Ukraine. When asked about the possible participation of Western troops, he said: "We do not rule out any option." Earlier, Paris clarified that the possible presence of NATO troops in Ukraine does not imply their participation in hostilities. This may include training missions and other forms of support.

Some countries, such as Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Canada, have expressed a willingness to consider aid options, but their positions remain cautious. Germany and a number of other countries, as before, express doubts about such an initiative. The risk of weakening American support for Ukraine in the event of Trump's victory was a key factor in intensifying the discussions. His "America First" policy may affect the level of aid to Kyiv, forcing European allies to look for alternative ways to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities.

Although the idea of sending Western troops to Ukraine remains only a scenario, the discussion of this step reflects the seriousness of the threats facing Europe. Great Britain and France demonstrate readiness for active action, understanding that stability in the region requires a collective and decisive response.
