Japan is preparing to remove molten nuclear fuel from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant

This autumn in Japan will begin the historical process of removing molten nuclear fuel from one of the reactors of the Fukushima-Dayic nuclear power plant, which has been disaster in 2011. This event will be the first attempt to clean nuclear materials after a devastating nuclear accident.

The process will use remotely controlled work. Fukushima representatives from Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings have already demonstrated this process. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has carried out development of robots for removal.

During a presentation in a shipyard in Kobe (Japan), a robot equipped with forceps slowly lowered from the telescopic pipe to a pile of gravel and lifted granules.

"We believe that the future test withdrawal of fuel residues from power unit # 2 is an extremely important step for consistent implementation of decommissioning works," said Yusuke Nakagava, Tepco manager in the fuel residual program.

In total, three affected reactors have about 880 tons of high -proof molten nuclear fuel. Some critics say that the Fukushima Daiti NPPs are scheduled for the Government and Tepco (30-40 years) can be too optimistic.
