The EU may postpone the start of negotiations on the accession of Ukraine due to the Hungarian veto

The beginning of Ukraine's accession to the European Union can be postponed by March 2024 through the veto of Hungary. According to Euractiv, Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban threatens to block Ukraine's issues, demanding a “strategic discussion” from the EU to support Kiev.

On December 14-15, the EU leaders' summit plans to discuss several key issues, including the start of Ukraine's accession, € 50 billion in economic support and allocation of EUR 20 billion for the needs of the Ukrainian army. In addition, a new package of sanctions against Russia is planned.

According to diplomatic sources, if Hungary is vetoed to Ukraine, the beginning of negotiations can be postponed to March 2024. This can be an attempt to find a compromise, but it is a baptism that Orban's position may remain unchanged. European diplomats believe that if Hungary blocks Ukraine, other countries, such as Georgia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, can also be victims of Hungarian veto.

The issue of support of Ukraine is of particular importance against the background of problems with the reconciliation of funding from the United States. EU support is expected to become critical for Ukraine in the face of aggravation of the situation in the East.
