The European Union has announced ambitious plans to expand the production of weapons and ammunition for Ukraine. In 2025, about 2 million artillery shells are planned in the EU countries, which is much higher than current volumes.
The European Commissioner stressed that only 20-25% of the weapons supplied to Ukraine is manufactured in Europe. Most purchases are made outside the EU, and long -term contracts with weapons manufacturers that are still missing are required to change this situation. Without such orders, Europe will not be able to significantly increase production in the coming years.
Financing of procurement of weapons from the EU budget is limited due to existing regulations. the European Peace Fund or frozen Russian assets can be used to meet Ukraine's needs In addition, Ukraine will receive from the EU about 30 billion euros in 2025, and will determine what share of these funds to be directed to defense needs.
One of the EU strategic initiatives is the integration of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex into the European Defense Industry. This will not only improve interaction, but also increase overall defense potential.
