EU will approve new sanctions against Russia on May 20

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the European Union would approve a new package of sanctions against Russia on Tuesday, May 20, during an EU Council meeting in Brussels. He reported this on the social network X.

According to him, a new package of sanctions is already ready for approval. It will be another step within the framework of pressure on the Kremlin due to a full -scale invasion of Ukraine, which has been going on since 2022.

Although the details of the document have not been made public at this time, it is expected that it will include new restrictions in the field of high technology, sanctions against companies that contribute to the supply of the Russian army, and measures aimed at combating the bypass of sanctions through third countries. It is also about new personal sanctions against representatives of the political and business environment of the Russian Federation.

In addition, Friedrich Merz commented on the situation around the negotiations in Istanbul, calling a great concession from Ukraine that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed to come to diplomatic consultations. At the same time, he stressed that Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who did not appear in Turkey, was in an uncomfortable position.

According to Mertz, Putin's refusal to come to the meeting he himself initiated as a diplomatic failure. This further undermines the trust in the Kremlin's real intentions to end the war.
