Zurabishvili used the veto on the law on "foreign agents" in Georgia

The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, has vetoed the law on "inagents", which was approved by parliament on the interior of mass protests on the streets.

In his announcement during a briefing, Zurabishvili characterized this law as "Russian" in its "essence and spirit", which contradict both the Georgian Constitution and European standards.

"This is an obstacle on our European path. It is veto fully legal, and today it will be transferred to Parliament. This law is not subject to any changes or improvement. Therefore, there is a very simple veto - this law must be abolished," Zurabishvili explained.

Now the bill will return to Parliament. However, in order to overcome veto, 76 deputies are needed, which is less than the number of votes in the parliamentary majority, which is 83 votes.

The reason for this conflict was the Law on Transparency of Foreign Elions, which the Georgia Parliament finally approved in the third reading on May 14. The law stipulates that non-governmental and media organizations that have more than 20% of income from abroad should be registered in a special register and submit financial statements each year.

In the country, mass protests against the adoption of this law, which critics are compared with the Russian, which the Kremlin restricts freedom of speech in their country, continued during the weeks. The Georgia Party states that there is no connection between these laws.

The bill was awarded a year after such an initiative caused mass protests and was withdrawn.
