Mass protests in Tbilisi: Statement by the President of Georgia

The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, spoke in support of the participants of the mass protests against the draft law "on foreign agents". In her microblog, she condemned the possibility of "special forces" using forces against peaceful citizens who advocate for the European future of Georgia. Zurabishvili emphasized that arrests continue and assured that Georgia will not succumb to re-Sovietization.

The draft law "on the transparency of foreign influence", which provides for the registration of organizations and mass media receiving funding from abroad, received support from the Legal Committee of the Parliament of Georgia. According to the president, the opposition deputies were expelled from the meeting before the vote.

These events took place against the background of repeated protests against the adoption of the law. Yesterday, the deputies fought during the discussion of the document, while the citizens came out for a peaceful protest. Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protest. Zurabishvili condemned such actions and supported the protest participants who defend the country's European future.

The president published a video of a peaceful protest after the adoption of the law on "foreign agents" and announced the expulsion of opposition deputies from the hearings. The organizers of the action said that they will continue the protest until the authorities refuse to pass the anti-democratic and anti-European law.

The parliament building is guarded by special police forces, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia reported the detention of 14 protesters, including Imed Kldiashvili and Davyd Endeladze. One injured police officer is also reported.
