Microsoft chooses Three Mile Island to supply energy for its AI centers

The US company Microsoft has concluded a 20-year contract with a three-mill-Ilend nuclear power plant, which aims to meet the growing energy needs of its data centers, specially designed for artificial intelligence. The restoration of the work of this station is planned for 2028, which causes some anxiety through its history.

The three-mill-Island, located in Pennsylvania, became known after a partial nuclear accident in 1979, which led to significant changes in the US nuclear policy. Although significant safety measures have been taken since then, the history of this object is still raising the issue of nuclear energy safety.

The American power plant on the island of Tri-Mile Island, where the most terrible nuclear accident in US history has occurred, is preparing for re-opening, against the backdrop of how Microsoft is looking for ways to meet their growth needs in energy, BBC writes.

The technological giant stated that he had signed a 20-year electricity contract at a Pennsylvania station, which will open again in 2028 after improvements.

The agreement is intended to provide an organization with a clean source of energy as energy -intensive data processing centers for artificial intelligence (AI) expands.

The plan will currently be aimed at approval of the regulatory bodies.

The owner of the Constelliation Energy station stated that the reactor he planned to restart is near the block that was injured in the 1979 accident, but "completely independent" from it.

The re -opening of the station will add more than 800 megawatts to the network electricity to the network, generating billions of dollars in the form of taxes and other economic activity, according to the study of The Brattle Group, which is referred to Constelel.

Microsoft is not the only technological company that turns to nuclear energy with increasing its energy needs. Earlier, Amazon also signed an agreement that includes the purchase of nuclear energy to power the Data Center. Now these plans are under close attention of regulators.

One of the largest accidents in nuclear energy was on March 28, 1979, at the three-mill-Ilend NPP, located on the Saskauhanna River, near Harrisberg.
