Montpellier is the first European city where every new building will be a work of art

In Montpellier, a French city, every house must now become a "work of art". The local administration decided that every new building should have works of art, such as frescoes, mosaics or sculptures. This initiative aims to give the city the character of an open-air art museum and make contemporary art a part of urban life.

Montpellier becomes the first city in the world where architects must consider cultural elements during construction. According to the established rules, the value of the work of art must be at least 1% of the value of the land on which the building is erected, but not less than €10,000.

An important stage is the involvement of different artists, and a special commission will monitor the projects to ensure the diversity of the selected authors. According to the plan until 2026, the city plans to saturate its public space with hundreds of works of art.
