In Norway, a scandal broke out after an outstanding citizen of the country under accusation of espionage in favor of China. This is the first case of this kind, which caused considerable resonance in the public and condemnation by local authorities.
Senior Advisor to the Norwegian Security Service (PST) Eirik Weum reported that Norway citizen had been charged with serious intelligence related to the disclosure of state secrets. He was arrested after traveling to China.
The man himself denies all the accusations. The China Embassy in Norway reported that they are aware of the incident, and therefore still do not want to make any comments.
Earlier, the embassy reported that suspicions of the PRC "are stigmatizing normal cooperation and exchange between China and Norway."
"Norway has Chinese entities that have accessed confidential information through research," says Volume Repreau, Associate Professor of the Norwegian Defense Academy (FHS).
The new one is that this is the first time when a Norway citizen is arrested for espionage in favor of China, the rest adds.
In his opinion, China was interested in technologies where Norway has achieved success. It is a maritime and defense sphere.
In its forecasts for 2024, PST marked China as the main threats in terms of intelligence against the interests of Norway, as China seeks to increase control over supplies chains and to increase the impact in the Arctic.
PST suggested that China, like Russia, would try to get Norwegian technologies through cabbage and recruitment of agents.
