New Year's decor that harms health

New Year's decorations create an atmosphere of comfort and celebration, but are they always safe for our health? Unfortunately, as experts testify, the usual elements of holiday decor — aromatic candles and garlands — can pose a serious threat.

Scented candles have become an indispensable element of winter comfort, but not everyone knows that they can harm health. In particular, paraffin candles, made from petroleum byproducts, release dangerous volatile organic compounds such as toluene and benzene. These substances are known for their toxic properties, as well as the ability to cause cancer, including leukemia. Studies confirm that a lit strawberry-scented paraffin candle can emit up to 2,098 parts per billion of formaldehyde, several times the safe level. And a candle with the aroma of kiwi and melon even reaches 12,742 parts. Even candles made of natural soy or beeswax are not always safe, because artificial fragrances often add toxic phthalates to their composition.

Light decorations, without which it is difficult to imagine the New Year's atmosphere, can also cause damage. According to psychologist Catherine Hall, garlands, especially blue ones, suppress the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. This happens due to the stimulating effect of blue light, which disrupts the daily rhythm. Multi-colored light bulbs can also negatively affect the quality of sleep due to their complex radiation spectrum, which interferes with the regulation of hormones. The situation is further complicated by garlands with the "flickering" mode. Flickering light overstimulates the brain, which can interfere with falling asleep even after the decorations are turned off.

To reduce the risks associated with Christmas decorations: Choose candles without aromas or with natural additives. Avoid paraffin candles, preferring soy or bee options. Use garlands of warm colors and give up blue light. In the evening, turn off festive lights, especially twinkling ones.

Christmas decorations can be safe if you approach their selection with understanding and caution. Let your holiday be not only bright, but also healthy!
