Russia's "shadow tanker fleet" came under EU sanctions

Due to the conflict in Ukraine, the European Union introduced another package of sanctions against Russia, the Associated Press reports. This time, the new restrictive measures are directed not only against the companies, but also against the "shadow tanker fleet" of Moscow, which transports liquefied natural gas through Europe.

In a statement published at a meeting of EU foreign ministers, it is said that the bloc will ban the transit of Russian LNG through bloc countries.

According to Brussels' estimates, 4 to 6 billion cubic meters of Russian LNG were delivered to third countries through EU ports last year. Russia is suspected of using a "ghost fleet" to circumvent sanctions in order to receive income from the sale of energy carriers.

In total, 61 new organizations were added to the EU list - most often these are companies, banks and other structures, in particular from China, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. Many of them are accused of circumventing EU sanctions or supplying Russia with valuable equipment.
