On February 16, 2025, seismographs recorded a new earthquake in the Poltava region. Underground magnitude shocks of 3.1 points on the Richter scale occurred on the night of February 16 near the village of Nova Dikanka, in the area of Brailka, Reshetilovsky district. Experts have attributed this phenomenon to the category of poor, so it did not cause significant damage or panic among the population.
This earthquake became the second in the region in February 2025. The first underground shocks were recorded on February 1. At that time, the power of the earthquake was 3.8 points on the Richter scale, and the epicenter was also located in the area of Brailka village, which causes some fears to increase seismic activity in the region. According to Igor Kornienko, Deputy Head of the Main Center of Special Control Control, seismic activity in the Poltava region has increased since 2015. The reason for this is the activation of the movement of tectonic plates in the region, which is located at the intersection of the Ukrainian crystalline shield and the Dnieper-Donetsk depression. It is this geological failure that can lead to underground shocks. In addition, according to the Main Center of Special Control, several earthquakes have already been recorded in Ukraine since the beginning of 2025. In particular, on January 16 in the Dnipropetrovsk region there was an earthquake of magnitude 2.9 points, and on January 20 in the Chernivtsi region, inconspicuous underground shocks of 1.3 points were recorded.
These cases of increased seismic activity indicate that Ukraine remains in the area of seismic risks, in particular in areas where geological faults take place. Scientists continue to study this phenomenon to minimize the possible consequences for the population and to predict future underground shocks.
