Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree on the appointment of Alexander Darchiev with a new ambassador of Russia to the United States. Darchiev will also perform the duties of a permanent observer in the organization of American states in Washington.
The appointment of a new diplomat took place after more than a six -year pause - from the fall of 2023 the position of Russian ambassador in the United States remained vacant after the end of Anatoly Antonov, who held this position from 2017 to 2024.
Darchiev has considerable experience in the field of diplomacy. His career began in 1992 when he joined the diplomatic service. Before that he worked at the US and Canada. In 2014-2021, Darchiev headed the Russian Embassy in Canada, and also held various diplomatic positions at the Russian Embassy in the United States.
The appointment of Darchiev occurs against the background of tense relations between Moscow and Washington, which complicates diplomatic dialogue between countries. Its main task will be an attempt to establish at least a minimum level of diplomatic communication between the two states.
