Russia releases imprisoned women to participate in the war in Ukraine

According to the report by The New York Times, in early June, Russian military recruits were released by a group of women who should join hostilities in Ukraine. This may indicate a new stage of involvement of criminals in military operations.

The exact details of the exemption and recruitment of women are still unknown. It is known that several women were taken from one of the prisons near St. Petersburg. The recruitment of women can be a single case or the beginning of a greater wave of involvement of prisoners in military service.

At the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, more than 30,000 women were in Russian prisons.

“Military recruiters began to visit women's prisons all over Russia last fall, offering prisoners in prisons for snipers, combat officers and front -line radios. It is unknown why women who joined military service remained prisoners without explanations, ”The New York Times writes.

During the conflict, many Russian men were released from prisons and joined the troops, which helped Russia restore military advantage over Ukraine. However, some released criminals have committed serious crimes, including killings.

It is unknown what duties will perform recruiting women on the front. Conversations with prisoners considered the possibilities of service with snipers, combat sanates and front -line radios for one year, but the details are not specified. It is noted that about 40 women out of 400 prisoners have signed contracts for military service.

In the fall of 2023, Redut military company, under the direction of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, conducted a recruitment of women for combat specialties to the Borz Volunteer Battalion, which was to participate in the war with Ukraine.

It is also noted that Russia is recruiting migrants detained on the border with Finland to participate in conflict in Ukraine.
