Hungary changes its position on continuing economic sanctions against Russia, and this has happened under the influence of a rigid statement by US President Donald Trump. This was announced by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslav Sikorsky after a meeting of foreign ministers of EU Member States in Brussels, RMF24 .
According to Sikorsky, Trump became the first world leader to openly named Russian President Vladimir Putin aggressor. In his statement, he warned Moscow of the possibility of imposing new sanctions if Russia did not start peace talks. This clear position of the United States has become a major factor that influenced the change in Hungary's decision, which previously blocked the continuation of EU sanctions against Russia.
Sikorsky also noted that the principle of unanimity when making decisions in the EU sometimes does not correspond to the national interests of Poland, as it may complicate sanctions against "unwanted countries and organizations".
The head of the Polish Foreign Ministry confirmed that one of Poland's tasks in the EU Council is the reconciliation of the 16th Package of Sanctions against Russia. European countries plan to approve new restrictions on the third anniversary of the full -scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine.
