European countries are preparing for a possible new influx of refugees from Ukraine because of the exacerbation of war and a possible reduction in American support. This was stated by German Minister of Internal Affairs Nancy Feser, emphasizing the need for uniform distribution of Ukrainians into EU countries.
According to Eurostat, in December 2024, more than 4.3 million Ukrainians were temporary protection in Europe. Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic were adopted the largest number of refugees.
“If Putin will increase the war even more and US support will disappear, it will lead to a new wave of Ukrainian refugees. We need a mandatory distribution of Ukrainians throughout the EU by a fair mechanism, ”Feser said.
She stressed that the current situation where most Ukrainians settled in only a few countries is unacceptable. In the case of an increase in refugee flow, "it will have to be changed".
It should be reminded that Ukrainians who escaped from the war received temporary protection status in the EU. This allows them to work, live and study in the countries that have been accepted. This provision was first applied to Ukrainians.
It is expected that in 2025 the European Union will revise its policy on the distribution of refugees in order to reduce the burden on individual states and create a more even reception system.
