European countries and international legal institutions have identified important steps for the creation of a special tribunal, which will punish political and military leaders of Russia for crime of aggression against Ukraine. As part of a meeting of legal advisers of the European Commission, the European Foreign Affairs Service, the Council of Europe, as well as Ukraine and 37 other countries, the basic parameters were approved that allow the start of the tribunal.
In particular, the tribunal will have the authority to be held accountable for persons who are headed by Russia and are of the highest responsibility for aggression, which led to the violation of Ukraine's borders and neglect of international norms. In this regard, the President of the European Commission Ursula von Der Lyen noted that justice for Ukraine is approaching, and the legal basis for the creation of a tribunal has already been laid.
Irina Wise, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office of Ukraine, emphasized the importance of this process not only for Ukraine but also for global justice. She called on countries seeking to preserve the world order, to join the initiative, emphasizing the need to punish the culprits of aggression and restore justice.
In addition, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Allen Berce noted that the creation of a special tribunal would be an important step not only for Ukraine, but also for the protection of human rights and the rule of law in the world, which will be relevant to future generations.
