The European Union is preparing new sanctions against Russia

The European Union is preparing to strengthen sanctions against Russia due to fears of a quick return of Donald Trump to the White House, Reuters reports citing sources. The Europeans are keen to ensure the long-term effectiveness of their restrictions, even if Washington's political course changes.

According to the new plans, the EU will introduce "comprehensive controls" on the supply of "suspicious" goods to Russia, tighten restrictions on the purchase of Russian oil and change the procedure for freezing Russian assets. Currently, this procedure requires confirmation every six months, but the new measures will simplify control.

Among the main innovations is the ability of customs officers to detain cargo if the destination looks illogical. For example, if it is necessary to cross the territory of Russia to deliver cargo to the countries of Central Asia, this may cause suspicion.

Reuters notes that any easing of sanctions by Washington could lead to a difficult situation for Europe. The United States, which has broad powers to punish sanctions violations, is a key guarantor of compliance. So, in the event of a change in US policy, the EU may find itself in a difficult position in the context of its sanctions obligations.
