NATO decided to send warships to protect the bottom of the Baltic Sea, responding to increasing tension in the region. According to Yle, the JEF countries (united expeditionary forces), including the United Kingdom, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway, will strengthen the monitoring of the situation, in particular through modern technologies.
As part of this decision, about ten ships will be placed in the Baltic Sea, which is on duty of NATO and sent by the Alliance Member States. Patrolling near energy and information cables will be their main task. Ships are expected to remain in the region until April.
JEF countries will also introduce new technologies to strengthen the observation of navigation in the Baltic Sea. In particular, through artificial intelligence, they will track vessels through the AIS system (automatic identification system) and evaluate their potential risk for important submarine objects.
The decision to increase the presence of NATO in the Baltic Sea was made on December 30 at the request of Finland and Estonia. This emphasizes the importance of the region for energy and information security.
