Rites of caroling, giving and sowing in accordance with the new church calendar

Ukrainian traditions of caroling, sowing and giving have undergone changes in connection with the transition of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine to the New Julian calendar. Here are the dates and rituals valid in 2023-2024.

When to carol? According to tradition, caroling begins on Christmas Eve, and according to the new style, it can be done in the evening of December 24. With the first star in the sky, the Holy Supper begins, and children go out in a group to greet their countrymen with carols, giving wishes for well-being and a rich harvest.

When to sow? Traditionally, sowing was done on the Old New Year - January 14. But now they began to sow on January 1, on the usual New Year. Boys, as usual, are celebrated in this ceremony by bringing grain (rye or wheat) to the house. It is also worth keeping this grain in the house as a talisman.

When to be generous? Giving can be done on January 1 on New Year's Day or on January 5 on Christmas Eve. The girls traditionally organize a charity event, carrying their gifts and musical numbers from house to house. Greeting the hosts with gifts and wishes for prosperity remains an important part of this rite, although in some areas boys also take an active part in this traditional celebration.
